Fever Fall to Valkyries in First-Ever Showdown, Aliyah Boston Hits Milestone Despite Defeat
The Indiana Fever experienced a tough defeat in their historic first matchup against the WNBA’s newest franchise, the Golden State Valkyries. The Fever came up short, losing 88–77 in what was a highly anticipated game.
The Valkyries, one of the league’s newest additions following the recent expansion, have rapidly gained attention in their inaugural season. Entering the league with strong momentum, Golden State has assembled a competitive roster through an offseason expansion draft. Notable additions to the team include Kate Martin, Kayla Thornton, Tiffany Hayes, and Chloe Bibby—all of whom have brought both skill and energy to the fledgling franchise.
After this game, the Valkyries hold a 6-6 record, placing them firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot—a notable achievement for a brand-new team.
While the spotlight was heavily directed toward Golden State due to their impressive entrance into the league, Indiana had its own share of headline-worthy moments. In particular, star center Aliyah Boston etched her name into the franchise record books during the game.
Despite the Fever’s loss, Boston delivered one of her most well-rounded performances of the season. She recorded 17 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, contributed one assist, and made her defensive presence known with three blocked shots. That final stat pushed her career block total with Indiana to 118, moving her past Teaira McCowan to claim the No. 4 spot on the Fever’s all-time list in that category.
The Fever’s official social media highlighted Boston’s accomplishment, and Boston herself acknowledged the achievement online. She reposted a congratulatory message from teammate Natasha Howard, responding with a simple but heartfelt “Thank you.” Additionally, the franchise named her the “Stat Leader of the Game,” underscoring her major contribution despite the team result.
Boston also celebrated the career milestone on Instagram, where fans and fellow athletes alike recognized her efforts.
Another strong performer for Indiana was Kelsey Mitchell, who added 16 points along with one rebound and two assists. Mitchell’s ability to put points on the board has consistently made her one of the team’s go-to scoring options.
Rookie guard Caitlin Clark, despite facing shooting struggles throughout the game, still made her presence felt. She scored 11 points and nearly recorded a triple-double with seven rebounds and nine assists—a demonstration of her all-around game and ability to impact the floor even when her shot isn’t falling. She remained active defensively and as a facilitator, continuing to play a key role for the Fever.
On the opposing end, Valkyries guard Kate Martin was notably matched up against Clark during several possessions, showcasing a competitive duel between two talented guards. Martin’s defense helped limit Clark’s offensive production, but the Fever’s young star still managed to contribute in several other areas.
The game attracted attention not only due to the Valkyries’ exciting new presence in the WNBA but also because it marked Indiana’s first loss since Caitlin Clark’s return to the lineup. Prior to this game, the Fever had gained momentum with Clark back on the court, and this defeat presents a temporary setback in their progression.
Looking ahead, the Indiana Fever will attempt to rebound and return to winning form. Their next opportunity comes in a challenging matchup against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The team remains hopeful that the combination of Boston’s consistent dominance, Mitchell’s scoring, and Clark’s playmaking will help propel them forward as the season unfolds.
