ESPN caught up with Grand Slam champion and Rory McIlroy’s former fiancee Caroline Wozniacki at the Masters – while the Northern Irishman was firing himself right back into contention.

McIlroy has already had a whirlwind week at Augusta. His wife Erica Stoll is in attendance, the pair making a telling gesture together earlier in the week, while their daughter Poppy was the star of the Par 3 contest. The 35-year-old experienced a disappointing late stumble on Day 1 and was accused of being “distracted” but bounced back to climb the leaderboard on Friday.

The four-time major winner scored a six-under-par round of 66 in the second round at Augusta, putting him back in contention. While fans were delighted to see his comeback, many were surprised by ESPN’s interview with Wozniacki as his rise up the leaderboard was beginning.

McIlroy and Wozniacki were in a relationship for several years and were even engaged in 2013. However, they abruptly ended their engagement over a phone call.

Wozniacki is at Augusta to enjoy the tournament – and the 2018 Australian Open winner shared her experience with ESPN. She said: “As an athlete, I think there’s some places that are so iconic that are on the bucket list, and this and Wimbledon are so special.

“There’s so much tradition here. When you arrive at the premises, there’s just something about not having your phone, really being in the moment. You see everything. It’s just so beautiful, and to be able to be here with my husband and enjoying it, just the two of us, no kids, no distractions, it’s really, really nice.

“There’s so much pressure here, it’s the small margins. These greens are so difficult, so if you don’t hit it at the perfect spot, you go from being in a position for maybe going for a birdie to being lucky getting a bogey.

“Watching someone who is so good at their craft I think has always been very inspiring, whether it’s tennis, golf, at work, whatever it is. As a spectator, it’s always fun to see when the best in the world are struggling, and that’s what you get here.”

While McIlroy has moved forward with Stoll, Wozniacki tied the knot with retired NBA player David Lee in 2019, and they’re now expecting their third child. She shared their pick for the Masters champion – and it’s not McIlroy.

“David and I, my husband, we always pick a winner before the tournament starts,” the ex-world No. 1 explained.

“We pick one that we think has a big chance of winning, and that was [Ludvig] Aberg.”

ESPN didn’t just chat with golfers at the Masters; former One Direction member Niall Horan popped up unexpectedly, and several NFL stars have been featured, including Seattle Seahawks’ new quarterback Sam Darnold.
