In a recent effort to address anti-Semitism, former U.S. President Donald Trump enacted an executive order that carries considerable consequences for international students and those participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
This directive permits the expulsion of international students involved in protests viewed as anti-Israel, in accordance with the administration’s overarching strategy to manage campus activities considered to endorse groups such as Hamas.
The executive order, enacted in late January 2025, instructs federal agencies to locate and possibly annul the visas of non-citizen students participating in these protests.
The administration defends this measure by citing immigration regulations that allow for the deportation of non-citizens who support or advocate for terrorist groups, with Hamas having been classified as one by the United States since 1997.
