Staten Island’s own Kamora Freeland, at just 17 years old, has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming one of the youngest licensed Black pilots in the country. With her newly minted private pilot’s license, Freeland is soaring into the spotlight and inspiring others with her passion for aviation.
Freeland, who is currently a senior at Kingsborough Early College High School, has demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in her journey to becoming a pilot. Her accomplishment includes passing rigorous solo and cross-country flight tests. Among her notable flights, Freeland had the opportunity to fly her mother to Martha’s Vineyard, a testament to both her skill and the trust placed in her by her family.
This fall, Freeland will embark on a new chapter as she heads to Spelman College, a historically Black institution in Atlanta. There, she plans to continue her aviation pursuits and work towards obtaining her commercial pilot’s license. Her ambitions don’t stop there; Freeland aims to further her career in aviation, with aspirations of one day flying commercially.
