Tourist submarine sinks in Red Sea killing at least 6 people

Local media outlets in Egypt have reported that six individuals have lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries following the sinking of a submarine in the Red Sea.

As per the local newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, the tourist submarine, named ‘Sindbad’, was situated in the Hurghada region of the Red Sea, preparing to embark on a journey to showcase the coral reefs to tourists.

It is reported that around 44 passengers from various nationalities had boarded the submarine, which was docked in front of a well-known hotel marina in Hurghada on March 27.

A rescue operation was initiated after the submarine began to submerge, with the Red Sea Health Directorate and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority reportedly placed on high alert. A total of 21 ambulances were dispatched to the location, accompanied by security and rescue personnel.

Authorities have successfully rescued 29 passengers from the vessel, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm. Among the nine injured, four individuals are reported to be in critical condition.

The Sindbad submarine has been conducting tourist excursions in the Hurghada area for several years.

On its website, the company states that it operates two of the world’s only ’14 real recreational submarines.’ Tourists are offered the opportunity to dive 25 meters (82 feet) deep to explore ‘500 meters of coral reef and its marine life.’

The Sindbad Submarines website describes the experience: “Descend below sea level for 40 minutes to enjoy the corals and fish, with divers available to capture unforgettable memories through photographs, before being returned to the marina by the same boat.”

The submarine is designed to accommodate 44 passengers, with two pilot seats and large round viewing windows for each guest. It allows visitors to experience the stunning underwater world of the Red Sea without getting wet, making it suitable for all ages and ensuring lasting memories.

The company also offers point-to-point transfers from hotels to their terminal, including land-sea transportation, all while maintaining a high standard of service.

Embarkation on the vessel generally commences with a check-in at 11am local time, succeeded by a boat transfer to the submarine, which is boarded at approximately 12:35pm.

Reports regarding the sinking surfaced just prior to noon.
