Brittney Griner shuts down fake Angel Reese quote about her and Allen Iverson
Atlanta Dream star Brittney Griner had to defend Angel Reese online after a fake quote of her emerged saying Griner could beat NBA legend Allen Iverson in a game of one-on-on.
Griner responded to a post on threads. “We know this fake,” she posted. “AI is, was, and will be one of the most exciting players to watch. I get crossed up watching his highlights. Lol.”
Iverson was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team in 2022. The 11-time All-Star was the league’s MVP in 2001 as he led the underdog Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals.
He priased Reese on a recent podcast appearance. “I love everything about her,” Iverson said. I love what she stands for. She reminds me of my little sister. She’s dope to me. She reminds me of myself hoop wise and on a personal level too.”

Griner is no slouch herself. The first-overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Champion is a 10-time All-Star, two-time scoring champion, and two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Griner challenged former Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins to a game of 1 v 1 while both were in Rio for the 2016 Olympics representing Team USA.
“I would love to just go out there and play against (Cousins),” Griner told reporters. “We talk a lot of crap to each other. I love talking to him. He’s really funny. I would love to just go out there and play against him.”
Cousins, fresh off a second-team All-NBA season, was up for the challenge. “I’m glad she’s that confident in her abilities, but she’s also a little delusional,” he said. “Whenever you’re ready to get it on camera and see her get embarrassed, I’m ready for it.”
The game never happened. If he did, longtime UConn head coach Geno Auriemma — who had many contested matchups against Griner while she was at Baylor — was confident in who he was picking.
“If there’s no referee, I’m gonna go to the ATM, I’m gonna sell my house, and I’m going to put all my money on DeMarcus Cousins,” he said.
