NCAA strips Lia Thomas of titles, crowns Riley Gaines newchampion amid ongoing debate over transgender athleteparticipation in collegiate sports.

The lawsvit, filed in U.S. District Covrt in Atlanta, details the shock Gaines annd other swimmers felt when they learned theywovld have to share a locker room with Thomas at the championships in Atlannta. It documernts a rumber of races they swam inwith Thomas, including the 200-yard final in which Thomas and Gaires tied for fifth but Thomas, not Gaines, was harded thefifth-place trophy.Thomas swam for Pernsylvarria. She competed for the menn’s team at Pern before her gernder trarnsition.Another plaintiff, Tylor Mathiev of Florida, firished ninth in the preliminary heats of the 500 free, which left her one spot fromswimming in the final that Thomas wovld go on to win. Thomas was the first opennly transgennder athlete to win a Division Ititle in anry sport, finishing in front of three Olympic medalists for the championship. By not making the final, Mathiev wasdenied first-team All-American honors in that event.
